Q&A With Treman & Treman Hygienist, Kathy Graham

(Responses edited for length and clarity.)

What has been the biggest surprise of social media marketing for you?

“Given that I had personally tried to facilitate our Facebook page once before and was incredibly unsuccessful at it, I was skeptical to try something like this. I couldn’t be more surprised at how easy it has become for me to make a daily post that I feel good about, using My Social Practice’s ideas. I don’t want our patients to feel like we are constantly trying to ‘educate’ them. I want them to look forward to seeing what we are going to do next!”

Which tools and content have best helped you accomplish your goals?

“Call-to-action posts are the ones that are most successful for us, even if the content does not include a giveaway. People like commenting on our posts when there is an end goal that they can help accomplish through their interaction.

What has been the greatest benefit of social media marketing for your practice so far?

“Patients are learning more about our staff and our community involvement. It gives them something to share with family and friends. For example, I’m waiting to post before-and-after pictures of one of our hygienists who’s about to have twins! Our posts about team members also help us to give them recognition and encouragement, and that gives us all a sense of pride in our practice!”

What does your team do in your practice to promote your social media efforts?

“We have taken down our ‘no cellphones allowed’ sign and replaced it with ‘Please like our Facebook page’! Recently, we’ve been running our first Facebook giveaway for patients to win a free Sonicare, and giving out invites in the practice encouraging them to enter.”

What advice do you have for practices just beginning with social media marketing?

“Go with My Social Practice and ask for Natalie to train you. She has a way of explaining this to you that makes you wonder why you had such a hard time mastering it. Make a list of things that you would like your community to know about you other than dentistry and then showcase one of those items each week.”

3 Things You MUST Do to Grow In-Practice Social Media Participation

Reading social media strategy is all well and good until you’re actually trying to get team members and patients involved. Participating in your practice’s social media has to be easy and it has to be fun.

In our regular checkups with our clients, we often ask them what they’ve found to be the hardest part of social media marketing. Without a doubt, the most common answer is along the lines of “getting team members to bring up our social media efforts with patients,” or “inviting patients to participate.” We understand! Snapping a pic with a patient or inviting a patient to leave a review can be awkward at first, especially for team members that aren’t especially outgoing.

These things get easier the more you do them, but kicking things off at the beginning takes some thought and planning. Basically, getting patients participating in your practice’s social media all comes down to this:

  1. It has to be easy.
  2. It has to be fun.
  3. Your whole team has to be on board with it.

Let’s take a little closer look at what you can do today to progress towards these goals.

Make It Easy

In a dental practice, you know that sticking to the schedule is critical, and that patients are also looking to return to their busy lives as soon as possible. So, make sure that any in-practice social media activity you plan for team members or patients takes two minutes or less.

For patients that don’t use social media often or aren’t familiar with how to use apps, sharing something on Facebook or writing a Google review can seem like a daunting task. Train all of your team members on how to explain to patients the easiest, simplest way to perform whatever social media task you choose. You could even have displays or cards on the front desk and in treatment rooms that explain visually how to Like your page on Facebook.

Make It Fun

Another way to phrase this might be to ask “what is the patient getting out of this for participating?” Little incentives go a long way. Whether they’re snapping a photo to support a good cause, Liking your page to get the doctor to perform a fun challenge, or writing a review for a chance to win a prize, make sure there’s something in it for the patient.

Get Your Whole Team On Board

Getting patients to participate in social media is much more difficult when the first time they hear about it is from one person at the end of their appointment. The moment a patient walks in your door, it needs to be obvious that social media fun and sharing are big parts of your team culture.

Have posters, cards, and displays around the office promoting your social media pages and your latest campaign or giveaway. Make sure your team knows about the latest posts on your pages, and encourage them to bring them up with patients and visitors. Create and share posts that feature your team frequently, so when patients or prospective patients arrive, they already know that you’re a social practice.

It’s also crucial to train your team on your practice’s social media and HIPAA policies so they can confidently and comfortably invite patients to participate while protecting their privacy.

When Patients Participate, Your Practice Grows

Making it fun and easy for patients to share about your practice on social media is one of the best ways to create advocates your practice. When their friends and family members see what a great experience they had with you, it’s a powerful word-of-mouth recommendation that’s more effective than any ad you could create alone.

We at My Social Practice have spent years honing our tools to make sharing about your practice as easy and intuitive as possible for both patients and team members. Find out more about our practice campaigns, Photo Booth App and MSP Reviews service by requesting a free demo!

“Trust Me, I’m a Dentist” Doesn’t Work in Dental Marketing

You can tell prospective new patients how great your dental practice is as many times as you want to… But it still won’t have the impact that a personal recommendation from a friend, family member, coworker or neighbor will have, inside a trusted social media network.

It’s really important to remember that your patients, fans, and team members are your practice’s greatest marketing assets. They can do FAR more to help new patients find you than you could ever do by yourself.

Why? Because their trusted, permission-based, and highly scalable social media networks are connected to hundreds, if not thousands, of potential new patients in your community. Did you know that, typically, over 50 percent of the people that your patients are connected to on social media live in the same geographic area in which they live — making them great prospective new patients for your practice.

READY FOR A QUICK DEMO OF OUR SOCIAL MEDIA SERVICE? SIMPLY CLICK HERE.

More important than the sheer numbers, however, is the TRUST they place in these connections. They trust these relationships far more than they trust you. Sorry to say it, but it’s true. In fact, today, nobody REALLY believes what YOU say about you — on your website, in your advertising, or even in your set-up, contrived endorsement videos!

In the old days, hiring a videographer to shoot one of your patients giving a video endorsement worked pretty well. But today, such videos are highly suspect in most consumers’ minds. After all, any business can get somebody to say something nice about them and then put it on their website.

Build Trusted, Organic Word-of-Mouth Marketing

People are smart today. They don’t trust what YOU say about yourself. And, they’re not fooled by fancy, schmancy branding. Stop wasting your money on such things and start focusing on the things that really work today. Creating advocates who willingly spread the good word about your practice. People today turn to reviews sites and their own social media networks to get recommendations and to decide who’s worthy of their business.

So stay tuned for more blog posts, free downloadable materials, examples, ebooks, case studies and other advice and training on how YOUR practice can easily and effectively turn your PATIENTS into your practice’s greatest advocates!

Brushing Your Teeth After Jaw Surgery

After speaking with many patients, I have been asked to write a blog on how to brush your teeth after orthognathic/ maxillofacial surgery.

On leaving hospital you may be given a mouthwash to rinse with. This mouthwash is often used after any type of surgery or dentistry work to decrease bacteria and to reduce the risk of infection. You will be encouraged to start brushing your teeth as soon as possible. In the beginning, I found using a soft baby brush was beneficial and Corsodyl mouthwash to ease the ulcers and to stop bacteria. However, it took me several weeks to get to this stage.

With the combination of scarring, swelling, bleeding and bands/wires it was nearly impossible to brush my teeth. I was in a huge amount of pain and found opening my mouth wide enough for a syringe was very challenging. To ensure that my internal wounds did not get infected and my mouth was hygienic, I rinsed with medicated mouthwash and salt water every 2 hours.

When I was discharged from the hospital I was given a bottle of Chlorhexidine Gluconate Mouthwash. This is a medicated mouthwash which can be used alongside regular brushing to help prevent everyday issues such as gum disease. Chlorhexidine belongs to a group of drugs known as antimicrobials. This chemical is found in very low doses in many mouthwashes and some contact lens solutions. Chlorhexidine works by decreasing the amount of bacteria in your mouth and can aid in reducing swelling and redness of the gums. If you are not issued with a medicated mouthwash when you leave the hospital you can often pick up a bottle at your local supermarket or pharmacy. Corsodyl is a branded name for this type of mouthwash. However, the non-branded Chlorhexidine Gluconate rinse is significantly less expensive than the branded mouthwash.
